Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, located about 55 miles northeast of Colombo, is one of Sri Lanka's most visited tourist attractions and a global leader in elephant conservation. Established in 1975, the orphanage began with just seven orphaned elephants and has since grown into a thriving breeding center that has successfully bred over 100 elephants.
The orphanage provides sanctuary for orphaned and injured elephants, many of which were victims of landmines, poachers, or accidents. Visitors can watch the elephants being fed, bathed in the nearby river, and cared for by dedicated keepers. The highlight of any visit is the elephant feeding session, where visitors can purchase bundles of sugarcane and bananas to feed the gentle giants.
Beyond the orphanage, Pinnawala offers opportunities to explore the surrounding countryside, visit nearby temples, and even take elephant-back safaris. The area is also known for its spice gardens and traditional Sri Lankan villages, providing a complete cultural experience.
The orphanage's conservation efforts extend beyond care and breeding. It serves as an important research center for elephant behavior and has played a crucial role in educating visitors about elephant conservation and the challenges these magnificent animals face in the wild.
